María Ariza-Avidad is a PhD. Student in the Department of Analytical Chemistry, University of Granada, Spain. Her PhD work focuses on colorimetric chemical sensors for heavy metals in water.
Ryan Arroyo is an undergraduate student at College of the Canyons, in Santa Clarita, CA. His interests lie in application of nanotechnology to problems in neurobiology.
Rachel Bisiewicz was a Brown University student with a concentration in chemistry (class of 2014). She joined the Sailor group in the summer of 2013. Her summer studies at UCSD were funded by the UCSD Amgen Scholars Program. She went on to UC Berkeley for her graduate studies.
Arnaud Chaix is a PhD student with Dr. Frédérique Cunin at the CNRS Institut Charles Gerhardt, Montpellier France.
David Choi is a student at Canyon Crest Academy High School, who joined the lab in April, 2013. He worked on porous Si composite nanostructures.
Pierre-Louis Choquin lives in Marseille, France. Trained in chemistry at the University of St Jerome in Marseille, he has a bachelor's degree in control and processing of materials from the University Paul Sabatier in Toulouse. In 2012 he began his master's degree studies in materials and associated technologies at Aix-Marseille University, France.
Audrey Crom was a senior at Mount Carmel High School in San Diego who joined the lab in March 2013. She went to the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University at Albany for her undergraduate studies.

Daniel Estrada joined the Sailor Group in the Fall of 2013 as a Ph.D. student in the Materials Science and Engineering program. He received his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of California Santa Barbara, working with Professor Steve DenBaars under Dr. Jake Richardson’s guidance to characterize a process for low temperature aqueous solution deposition of ZnO current spreading layers on GaN LEDs.
Lee Greenawald worked on her PhD in Chemistry at West Virginia University when she particpated in the SSSiN, collaborating on a NIOSH-funded project to investigate the properties of optical fiber-mounted porous Si photonic crystals as an end of service life indicator for personal respirators. Her discovery project focused on optical sensors for cyanide. Her mentor was Nicole Fry.
Geoff Hollett is a PhD student in the Materials Science and Engineering program at UCSD. He received the BASc degree from the University of Waterloo in Canada in 2013. His interests lie in nanomaterials applications in medicine.
Jinmyoung "Jimmy" Joo (mentor) is a post-doctoral researcher at UCSD who joined the lab in March, 2013. He completed his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Korea in February 2012 under the direction of Prof. Sangmin Jeon. His interests lie in the synthesis of functional nanomaterials for biological applications.
Nithin Krishnamurthi is a student at Torrey Pines High School (class of 2016) who is participating in the 2013 Summer School for Silicon Nanotechnology and in the Introductory Chemistry Tutorial. He went to UC Berkeley for his undergraduate studies.
Gha Young Lee was a sophomore at Torrey Pines High School (class of 2015) when she joined the lab in November, 2012. She went to Harvard University for her undergraduate studies.
Heidi Leonard (mentor) is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry who joined the group in Fall 2012. She received her B.S. degree in Chemistry from Pomona College (Claremont, CA). Her research interests focus on therapeutic applications of silicon-based microparticles.
Ghayoung (Gha) Lee is a junior at Torrey Pines High School (class of 2015) who joined the lab in November, 2012. She participated in the 2012 and 2013 Summer School for Silicon Nanotechnology and this year she is serving as a project mentor. Her project "Search for Better Way of Measuring Dielectric Constant Using Capillarity" placed 1st in the GSDSEF (Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair) in March, 2013.
Junnan Liu is a UCSD undergraduate Chemistry/Biochemistry major (class of 2016) from Eleanor Roosevelt College who joined the lab in May, 2013 and is studying new methods to prepare porous Si nanoparticles. Her mentor is Emily Anglin.
Zheng "Fiona" Liu is a UCSD undergraduate Chemistry major (class of 2015) who joined the lab in January 2013 and is studying biomedical applications of porous Si microparticles. Her mentor is Alejandra Nieto Pena.
David Roberts is a UCSD undergraduate Chemistry/Math double major (class of 2015) who joined the lab in Spring 2013 and is studying methods to control the size of porous Si nanoparticles using a microfluidizer. He plans to study the properties of these materials relevant to in vivo drug delivery. His mentor is Dr. Emily Anglin.
Nisha Sheth (mentor) is a UCSD undergraduate Nanoengineering major (class of 2014) who joined the lab in Spring 2013 and is studying biomedical applications of porous Si microparticles. She was supported on a Doris A. Howell Research Scholarship this summer.
Emily Siegler was a High school student at University City High School (class of 2014). She joined the lab in January, 2013 and is studying the optical properties of porous silicon films, testing and validating the Looyenga and Bruggeman effective medium models. She went to UCLA for her undergraduate studies.
Sanahan Vijayakumar (mentor) is an undergraduate student at McGill University in Canada. He participated in the summer school last year (2012), and is serving as a mentor this year. He previously worked on Sanofi-Aventis BioGENEius Challenge Canada projects, targeting Raman-active gold nanoparticles to lung cancer for molecular imaging under the guidance of Professor Gang Zheng, and he investigated antibacterial properties of lichen under the guidance of Dr. Irwin Brodo.
Thiago Villa is a senior Biosystems Engineer at the University of São Paulo - Brazil, in the Nanotechnology, Biosensors and Devices Lab. He has worked on Langmuir-Blodgett films, "green" synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles, photonic crystal biosensors, and most recently porous silicon. Thiago's current work in Brazil focuses on using photoluminescent porous silicon to detect proteins, antigens and biomarkers. He is sponsored by the USP Innovation Agency's Entrepreneurship Exchange Program.
Joanna Wang is a first year Ph.D. student in Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) who joined the group in the summer of 2013. Her undergraduate research at the University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign with Professor Paul Braun focused on polymers and polymer brushes. Her current research interests lie in the area of biomedical applications of polymers and nanomaterials.
Ling Zhang was a chemistry undergraduate student majoring in analytical chemistry with Prof. Jianmin Wu at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. Her interest was in porous silicon-based biosensors.
