2018 SSSiN Participants – UC San Diego Materials Research Science and Engineering Center

Jacopo Andreo is a Ph.D. student at the University of Parma, participating in the 2018 SSSiN as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) Nano-OligoMed program. He is working on the synthesis, characterization and application of metal complexes and clusters with zwitterionic ligands (in particular with thioamidyl-phosphonium (P+C(S)N−R) funcional groups). He obtained his BSc and MSc in chemistry at the University of Turin with maximum qualification. He will participate in the SSSiN from July to August, 2018.

Roberto Corradini is an Associate Professor at the University of Parma, where he teaches courses in Organic, Bioorganic, and Peptide Chemistry. His research interests involve molecular recognition of biologically active species, with particular focus on interactions of amino acids and nucleic acids (DNA, RNA). He will participate in the SSSiN as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) Nano-OligoMed program from 1 August to 1 September, 2018. He will act as a Senior Mentor to the junior participants.

Tengyu He is a first year Ph.D student in Materials Science and Engineering at UCSD. He received his B.E. in Metallurgical Engineering at Northeastern University, Shenyang, China and his M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering at Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is interested in the development of porous silicon nanoparticles for medical applications and will participate in the SSSiN from 1 July to 31 August, 2018.

Moon Kyoung Jeong is a PhD student in professor Ji-Ho Park's Lab at KAIST. She obtained a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from KAIST in 2013, and a Master's degree in Bio and Brain Engineering from KAIST in 2015. She is interested in the development of porous silicon nanoparticles for medical applications. She will participate in the SSSiN from 1 April to 31 August, 2018, under the mentorship of Joanna Wang.

Martina Neri is participating in the 2018 SSSiN as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) Nano-OligoMed program. Born in Palestrina Italy, she obtained a B. Sc. at Sapienza University of Rome in 2013 and an M. Sc. in 2016 at Sapienza University of Rome, working in the field of organic synthesis and supramolecular chemistry. She joined the group of Prof. Roberto Corradini at University of Parma in November 2017 as a PhD student, and is interested in the development of peptide nucleic acids as tools for nanomedicine and medical diagnostics. She will participate in the SSSiN from 2 July to 31 October, 2018.

Hunter Pauker is an undergraduate Chemical Engineering major at UC Davis (Class of 2018). He worked under the direction of Dr. Ristenpart of the UC Davis Chemical Engineering Department, researching the chemical engineering aspects of beer brewing. For his 2017 SSSiN project, he worked on an optical sensor that could be used as a visual, real time sensor for alcohol content during the brewing of beer. He will be a mentor for the 2018 SSSiN

Andrea Perry is a second-year undergraduate studying Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). She worked as a research assistant in Professor Paul V. Braun's lab examining the applications of porous silicon as a photonic device. For the 2018 SSSiN, she will focus on applications of porous silicon in nanomedicine. She will participate in the SSSiN from 21 May to August 18, 2018. Her mentor is Joanna Wang.

Alessandro Porchetta is a Junior Researcher at the Chemistry Department of the University of Rome, Tor Vergata, participating in the 2018 SSSiN as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) Nano-OligoMed program. Marianna Rossetti is a post-doctoral researcher in the Chemistry Department of the University of Rome, Tor Vergata, participating in the 2018 SSSiN as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) Nano-OligoMed program. For her PhD in Chemical Science at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, she explored the possibility of using DNA molecules as functional tools for biosensing and drug delivery applications. She will participate in the SSSiN from 1 July to 31 August, 2018

Adrian Teruel is a PhD student in Chemistry at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), sponsored by the Spanish Government for the project “Micro/nanostructured systems functionalized with molecular gates to smart drug delivery in IBD” under the supervision of Prof. Ramón Martínez Máñez. Adrian received the PharmD degree (Cum Laude) from the Miguel Hernández University in Alicante (Spain) in 2013. In 2014 he completed a MSc in Drug Research at the University of Valencia, working within Marival Bermejo and Virginia Merino’s team on smart drug delivery systems. He worked on nanodrug systems under the direction of Françoi-Xavier LEGRAND at the Université Paris-Sud XI (Paris, France) during his 4th year of his PharmD degree. He will participate in the SSSiN from June to September, 2018.

Sanahan Vijayakumar is a PhD student in the UCSD Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) program who will join the Sailor Group in Fall 2018. He completed his B.Eng. in 2017 in Materials Engineering at McGill University in Montreal, Canada where his previous research focused on preparation of porous silicon nanowires using Metal Assisted Chemical Etch (MACE). During his studies at McGill, Sanahan interned with Prof. Gaël Gautier at the University of Tours, France and then with Prof. Nicolas Vöelcker at the University of South Australia. Sanahan was a participant in the 2012 SSSiN and he served as a Senior Mentor in the 2013 SSSiN. He will participate in the 2018 SSSiN as a Senior Mentor.

Dr. Mong-Lin (Mary Ann) Yang is an Associate Professor at Concordia University in Saint Paul, MN, where she leads CSP’s undergraduate research program in biology. Her research interests include the development of mesoporous silica-based nanofiber scaffolds for nerve tissue engineering and detection of malonyl-CoA decarboxylase (MLYCD) in patient fibroblast lysates and in serum. She will participate in the SSSiN as a Senior Mentor from June 1 to August 31, 2018.
