James Fulmer is an entering PhD student at UC San Diego, in the Chemistry and Biochemistry department. Originally from the bay area in California, James received his Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry from UC Davis in 2012. He has previously worked as a research assistant, a forensic scientist, and a High School Chemistry Teacher. He likes water sports, cats, music, and Indian food. He will participate in the SSSiN from July 1 to August 31, 2019.

Rae Hyung Kang is a PhD student in professor Dokyoung Kim's lab at Kyung Hee University, College of Medicine, S. Korea. He received his B.S. in the Department of Biotechnology and Environmental engineering at Catholic University of Korea, Bucheon, S. Korea and his M.S. in the Department of Biotechnology at Catholic University of Korea, Bucheon, S. Korea. He is interested in developing a drug delivery system based on porous silicon nanoparticles, with a focus on anti cancer therapy. He will participate in the SSSiN from 8 July to 31 August, 2019.

Yong-Chen (Sandy) Ke is an undergraduate student at National Sun Yat-sen University, in the Department of Chemistry, and will be a first year MS student in the department of Biomedical Engineering at National Taiwan University in Fall, 2019. Her research interests lie in the field of biomaterials and her undergraduate thesis concerns the use of gold nanoclusters and virus-like particle templates for biosensing. She will participate in the SSSiN from June 30 to August 24, 2019.

Yiliu Li is an undergraduate student from Zhejiang University, where she expects to receive her BS degree in chemistry in 2020. She is participating in the 2019 Summer School for Silicon Nanotechnology as part of an extended student exchange with Zhejiang University, managed by Prof. Min Wang. Ms. Li plans to investigate photoluminescent properties of porous silicon nanomaterials. She will be visiting from July 2019 to March, 2020.

Xiaomei Miao is an MS student in the Department of Silicone Chemistry and Materials at Hangzhou Normal University, China. Her thesis work focuses on the synthesis and chemical functionalization of vinyl POSS and fluorinated silicone resins. She is participating in the 2019 Summer School for Silicon Nanotechnology as part of an extended collaboration with the Key Lab of Organosilicon Chemistry and Material Technology at Hangzhou Normal University, under the direction of Prof. Lianbin Wu. She plans to investigate the photophysical properties of porous silicon nanomaterials. She will be visiting from July to August, 2019.

Etienne Piantanida is a Ph.D student in the group of Prof. Luisa De Cola at the Institut de Science et d’Ingénierie Supramoléculaires, University of Strasbourg. She received her master's degree in Industrial Chemistry from Padua University in 2016. Her research is focused on the development of nanocomposite hydrogels for biomedical applications. Her SSSiN project will focus on porous silicon/hydrogel drug delivery systems for neuronal repair. She is participating in the SSSiN in the context of the EU Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) Nano-OligoMed program, visiting from July to September, 2019.

Yi Shan is an undergraduate student from Zhejiang University, where she will receive her BS degree in chemistry in 2020. She is participating in the 2019 Summer School for Silicon Nanotechnology as part of an extended student exchange with Zhejiang University, managed by Prof. Min Wang. Guillem Vargas is a third year PhD student of Dr. Nora Ventosa at the Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona, and he is participating in the 2019 Summer School for Silicon Nanotechnology in the context of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) Nano-OligoMed program. Mr. Vargas plans to interface the nanovesicle/quatsome technology developed in his lab in Barcelona with porous silicon nanoparticles, to create hybrid hard/soft core-shell systems. The quatsome coating is intended to mediate cellular internalization and endosomal escape and the porous Si nanoparticles are intended to protect the nucleic acid cargo for more effective release, similar to the fusogenic systems our lab developed previously (Nature Commun.2018, 9, 1969). He will be visiting from May to September, 2019.

Roselien Vercauteren is a PhD student of Professor Laurent Francis at the Université Catholique de Louvain. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree (Cum laude), in Civil Engineering (majoring in Applied Chemistry and Physics, minor in Biomedical Engineering) and a Master’s Degree (Magna cum laude) in Chemical and Materials Engineering (majoring in Nanotechnologies) from the Louvain School of Engineering, Université Catholique de Louvain. Ms. Vercauteren plans to work on optical sensor technologies relevant to detection of pathogenic bacteria in food and water. She visits the laboratory for the period July 1, 2019 through December 15, 2019, to participate in research activities related to her PhD thesis work and to participate in the 2019 SSSiN.

Shiyao Wang is a second year PhD student of Dr. Thomas Lee at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She received a Bachelor's degree in Bioscience from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and gan MPhil degree from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She is interested in the use of luminescent porous silicon nanoparticles for biosensing applications and she will participate in the SSSiN from July to November, 2019.

Dr. Yue Yan is a research associate from the Key Lab of Organosilicon Chemistry and Material Technology at Hangzhou Normal University, P.R.China. He is participating in the 2019 Summer School for Silicon Nanotechnology a Senior Mentor, from July to Aug, 2019. His participation is part of an extended collaboration with the Key Lab of Organosilicon Chemistry and Material Technology at Hangzhou Normal University, under the direction of Prof. Lianbin Wu. His research interests focus on the chemistry of porous silicon, silicon quantum dots, and silica-based phosphors, and their applications in biosensors, drug delivery, and emissive displays and lighting devices.
