Taraneh Barjesteh is a junior at Canyon Crest Academy. For her Discovery Project, she is excited to explore porous silicon as a drug delivery agent for photodynamic therapy, particularly in cancers of hard tissue.

Lorenzo Calvano will be a freshman at Harvey Mudd College this Fall (2017). He previously participated in the 2016 SSSiN, while a student at La Jolla High School. He will be a mentor for the 2017 SSSiN.

Y-Phuong Cao is an undergraduate Biotechnology Engineering student at UCSD (class of 2018). She is participating in the 2017 SSSiN as part of her BE Senior Design Project. She will be working on application of porous silicon microparticles as injectable delivery vehicles for multiple therapeutics.

Anushree Chaudhuri is a student at Westview High School (Class of 2020) who will be participating in the 2017 SSSiN. She is interested in studying the electrochemical characteristics and various sensing applications of porous silicon.

Keying Guo is a second year PhD student in biomaterials engineering and nanomedicine under the supervision of Dr. Beatriz Prieto-Simon and Prof. Nico Voelcker at the University of South Australia. His research focuses on the development of porous silicon based electrochemical sensors, focused on two detection problems with significant impact in the food and biomedical industry: viruses and exosomes.

Michael Gutierrez is a sophomore undergraduate student (class of 2019) at the University of California San Diego, majoring in Biology. He is participating in the 2017 SSSiN as an NSF Bioengineering REU student.

Asuka Inoue is a PhD student studying under the direction of Prof. Minoru Fujii at the department of electric and electrical engineering at Kobe University in Japan. She is working on nanocomposite structures of silicon quantum dots with metal nanoparticles. She will be participating in the SSSiN from July 2017- February 2018.

Etienne Palos is in his second year as an undergraduate Nanotechnology major (class of 2019) at UNAM’s Centro de Nanociencias y Nanotecnología. His interests include biomedical applications of nanomaterials and nanostructure physics.

Hunter Pauker is an undergraduate Chemical Engineering major at UC Davis (Class of 2018). He previously worked under the direction of Dr. Ristenpart of the UC Davis Chemical Engineering Department, researching the chemical engineering aspects of beer brewing. He worked on activated chemical sensors.

Suraj Srinivasan is a 10th grader at Francis Parker School (Class of 2019). He will join the program in July 2017. He is interested in polymer-porous silicon composite nanostructures, prepared by 3D printing methods.

Tang Tang is a postdoctoral researcher in the Ruoslahti Lab at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute. She completed her PhD in Chemistry at UC Davis in 2016 under the supervision of Prof. Angelique Louie. Her PhD work focused on the development of novel molecular imaging probes for magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography. She will be working on porous Si-based therapeutic nanoplatforms during the 2017 summer school.

Bryan Toth is a UCSD undergraduate Chemistry major (Revelle, Class of 2018). He participated in the 2015 SSSiN and will act as a senior mentor in the 2017 SSSiN.

Zhujun Xiao is an undergraduate student from Zhiyuan Honors Program of Shanghai Jiaotong University (Class of 2018). In her undergraduate research at Shanghai, she has worked on silicon materials as anodes for lithium-ion batteries. For the 2017 SSSiN, she is interested in the photophysics of porous silicon nanomaterials.

Qinglin Yang began Ph.D. studies in the Materials Science and Engineering program at UCSD in 2017. Her undergraduate research at UIUC with Professor John A. Rogers involved flexible and stretchable structures and electronic devices. Her graduate research at Stanford with Professor Debbie G. Senesky focused on GaN-based devices that can operate in harsh environments. For the 2017 SSSiN, she is interested in porous silicon applied to nanomedicine.

Jihee Yoo is a senior at Gachon University, Korea, majoring in Food Science and Biotechnology. She is interested in synthesis of porous Si nanostructures and their surface chemistry related to nano-enabled drug delivery systems. She will be participating in the SSSiN from July 1, 2017- Aug 20, 2018.

Tian Zeng is an undergraduate Chemistry student at UCSD (class of 2018). She has previously worked under Dr. Keary Engle at TSRI on catalysis, and she has exercised her passion for teaching in the OASIS program at UCSD. For the SSSiN she will be working on luminescent porous silicon.
