Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

At the graduate levels, the MRSEC will leverage established institutional fellowship programs that are focused on broadening participation and overcoming social, educational, and economic barriers to graduate education. These recruitment and retention tools include San Diego Fellowships, Eugene Cota-Robles Fellowships, McNair Fellowships (targeting low-income, first-generation college students), and the Irene McFarland Trust Fellowship (targeting American Indian students). The partnership with the Fleet Science Center, the RIMSE Summer Schools, and the REU program will be mechanisms to further diversify the pool of qualified PhD and MS applicants. To support student success and retention, the MRSEC-sponsored professional development opportunities for students will include US and international student exchanges and internships in academic, government and industry research labs.
