New Thin Film Storage Media
Two approaches are under investigation to meet the future requirements of robust ultra-high storage density media. One effort involves developing suitable composite films consisting of ferromagnetic nanoparticles in an insulating matrix. In the initial work the matrix is antiferromagnetic, which affords a unique flexibility. Subsequent systems will involve non-magnetic insulating matrices. The second effort concentrates on candidates to replace the current Co-Cr based films, e.g., Mn-Al, and various borides and carbides of the 3d magnetic transition elements. |
