Nanoparticle Arrays via Electrodeposition
Dr. Fred Spada, an Associate Researcher at CMRR, is investigating the conditions for preparing arrays of nearly-monodispersed ferromagnetic nanoparticles by electrodeposition. Achieving this goal will permit low-cost preparation of low-saturation-field heterogeneous GMR films, as well as opening up the possibility of preparing new storage media. In the heterogeneous GMR film application, the intent is to prepare nearly-monodispersed flat disk-shaped magnetic nanoparticles which would readily saturate in low fields, and connect them with a non-magnetic conductor. For the media application, we would prepare magnetically "hard" nanoparticles. In both cases, the approach is to control the electrodeposition voltage sequences and bath compositions such that the deposition will be inhomogeneous - precisely the reverse of what is usually sought. |
