Joanna McKittrick, AMES Dept., UCSD, has initiated a program to prepare films with perovskite structure by laser ablation.

These are orthoferrrites, of which LaFeO3 will be the initial composition. Orthoferrites are antiferromagnetic and LaFeO3 has a Néel temperature, TN = 750K. Therefore, this compound has the potential to serve as a robust, high TN antiferromagnetic GMR biasing material which could maintain a high biasing field at temperatures above those available with NiO-CoO alloys. A potential drawback is the fact that the orthoferrites have a weak ferromagnetism associated with a canting in the alignment of the two antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices. However, our work with antiferromagnetic nanoparticles, discussed above, suggests the possibility that crystallites in polycrystalline orthoferrite films may exhibit anomalous behavior such as pinning of the small moment.
